Description

The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African-Americans (Initiative) Film Screening and Discussion Series (#AfAmEdFilms) will screen films that depict positive and compelling stories of students, families, and communities striving for academic excellence. Each film challenges and disrupts negative stereotypes about African American students, families, and communities. Each film screening will be accompanied by a dialogue/community forum designed to discuss themes and topics that emerge from the film and are designed to inform a national conversation about challenges and opportunities to ensuring African American educational excellence for all children, youth, and young adults. This event will also have demonstrations from STEM experts!

This month's event will feature the film Traveling Without Moving. Traveling Without Moving is a science-adventure film about three teens whose science project unlocks the key to finding their missing parents! The science in the film is based on the quantum mechanics theory “Many Worlds,” and also the science of wormholes. The film starts Steve Guttenberg (“Lavalantula”, “3 Men and a Baby”, “Cocoon”, “Police Academy”, “Diner,” etc.) and features Harry Lennix (“The Blacklist”, “Man of Steel”, “Chiraq”). U.S. Rep. Bill Foster (the only physicist in Congress) also makes a cameo.

The film was produced by Fresh Films, now headquartered at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. The program combines classroom training with hands-on experience alongside the professionals on a film set to expose teenagers to film industry career possibilities that combine the arts with STEM skills—all while teaching life skills such as leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork.
